THE FLATS –
The Georgia Tech volleyball team swept Southern Miss (25-20, 25-21, 25-19) on the final day of the Georgia Tech Invitational at O’Keefe Gym. The Jackets improved to 6-6 on the season, while the Golden Eagles fell to 11-6.

“I think it was a great change of approach and personality tonight,” head coach Michelle Collier said. “That’s what we’ve been talking about; giving ourselves a chance to stay in the game. If you look at our service errors it was probably one of the lowest numbers that we’ve played all season. Still we served aggressively and were able to keep the pressure up.”

The Yellow Jackets hosted a Brazilian Block Party for the match against Southern Miss to welcome Coach Collier to Georgia Tech.

“It was exciting and good to see so many people here,” Collier said. “We got to meet a lot of the Brazilian students that go to Georgia Tech and they were excited. It was fun. The most important thing was that we grew as a team tonight and we need to keep building on that.”

Tech out-hit Southern Miss .238 to .086 led by All-Tournament Team selection Teegan Van Gunst’s 14 kills and Courtney Felinski’s 11 kills. Rebecca Martin had a double-double with 31 assists and 13 digs, while London Ackermann added 12 digs. Freshman Sydney Wilson hit a team-best .375 with seven kills on 16 swings to go along with five blocks.

Up by one, 17-16, the Yellow Jackets rattled off three-straight points to gain the momentum to finish set one, 25-20. Tech found its rhythm in set two after breaking a 10-10 tied and going on a 6-1 rally to go up 16-11 and to eventually win 25-21. Tech kept its momentum into set three, never losing the lead and winning the set, 25-19.

Georgia Tech is back in action Sept. 23 against Kennesaw State. The Jackets and Owls square off for the first time in school history at 5 p.m. at O’Keefe Gym.
