Volleyball Rallies to Defeat NC State
Jackets came back from 2-0 deficit to win
RALEIGH, N.C. – Down two sets to none in the match, the Georgia Tech volleyball team (21-6, 12-3 ACC) rallied to win the final three sets to defeat NC State (16-11, 9-6) Friday night at Reynold’s Coliseum. The 21 wins are the most since Tech won 21 in 2009, which was the last time the Jackets went to the NCAA Tournament.
How It Happened
Tied 4-4 in game one, the Wolfpack rattled off six straight points to make it 10-4. The Jackets worked back to take an 18-14 lead, but the Pack managed a comeback to knot the set 19-19. From there, NC State took the lead and held it to narrowly capture the opening game, 25-21.
The Wolfpack recovered from a 14-6 deficit in game two to tie the set 15-15. The teams stayed neck and neck for the remainder of the set. Tied 22-22, NC State pulled ahead with set point 24-22 and was able to put the game away 25-23.
In set three, the Jackets were down 13-11 and rallied back to take a 14-13 lead. The momentum stayed with the Jackets who pushed the tempo to win the set 25-18.
Georgia Tech stayed in rhythm in game four, jumping out to a 13-9 lead. The Jackets expanded that to a 19-14 advantage and scored the final six points in the game to win it 25-14.
The Jackets kept their foot on the gas pedal and accelerated to a 8-3 lead at the switch in game five. Georgia Tech never looked back and shut the door on the Wolfpack with a 15-7 fifth-set victory.
“I think we back to believing in the things that got us this far as a team,” head coach Michelle Collier said. “We went after it and started playing with a lot more confidence than we had the first two games. We found ways to eliminate the right side of their attack that was really efficient. Our serving did a really good job of that and we did a better job with our blocking. We did some different things with the lineup and they came together for this win.”
-Teegan Van Gunst tallied her 15th double-double with 20 kills and 13 digs on .314 hitting
-Rebecca Martin got her fifth double-double with 36 assists and 10 digs
-Gabriela Stavnetchei put down 13 kills and five blocks, while Annika Van Gunst added 11 kills
-London Ackermann put up 17 digs
-Lauren Pitz put down nine kills on .421 hitting to go along with six block assists
-Kodie Comby recorded eight kills on .438 hitting with six blocks
The Jackets square off at No. 8 North Carolina on Saturday at 6 p.m. on the ACC Network Extra.
