Volleyball Falls to Miami, 3-1, in Season Finale
Yellow Jackets finish season with first winning record since 2012
THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech volleyball team (18-14, 9-11 ACC) fell in four sets to Miami (21-9, 14-6) on Friday afternoon in the Yellow Jackets’ season finale. It marks the first time Georgia Tech has finished with a winning record since 2012.
How it Happened
The Yellow Jackets used an 8-0 run to turn a 5-3 lead into a 13-3 advantage in the opening set. Georgia Tech tallied 16 kills on 25 swings with one error to hit .600 in the set, and win 25-16.
In set two, Miami jumped out to an 8-3 lead. The Hurricanes used that momentum to win the set, 25-11. The third set was a back and forth battle. With the score tied 16-16, Miami found its rhythm and used a 9-3 run to win 25-19.
The Yellow Jackets were within two points of Miami, 20-18, late in game four. The Hurricanes scored four-straight to take a 24-18 lead and won the game, 25-19.
“I think tonight we faced a problem we faced all season with being consistent,” head coach Michelle Collier said. “We have played some great volleyball this season, but we have also let some matches get away. Today Miami was able to execute offensively after the first game and we were not able to match it.
"I’m very proud of the work we have done this season. We have reached some milestones as a team and individually, and I think we have grown a lot. It is exciting to get most of this group back next year and continue to build upon what we have created this year. Overall, it was a great season and I am proud of how my players worked hard.”
- Sydney Wilson and Teegan Van Gunst each tallied 10 kills, and Annika Van Gunst held down the back row with 11 digs.
- London Ackermann put up eight digs. Ackermann finished the season with 478 digs, which is 10th in Georgia Tech’s season records.
- Lauren Pitz added seven kills, while Ashley Askin put down six.
- Georgia Tech finished the season with 1,637 kills, which are the most since the 2010 team recorded 1,652.
