No. 23 Jackets Fall At Pitt, 5-0

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Mott Hyde had three hits but No. 23 Georgia Tech was knocked off by Pittsburgh, 5-0, Saturday morning in the middle game of an ACC series in the Steel City.

The Panthers, who won Friday night’s series-opener 4-3 in 13 innings, claimed the series with Saturday’s victory and improved to 14-11 overall and 6-5 in the ACC. Tech slipped to 15-12, 5-6.

Hyde was 3-for-4 and Keenan Innis had the Yellow Jackets’ other base hit with an eighth-inning single. Lefty Devin Stanton allowed two runs over his 4.1 innings on the mound and was hung the loss (1-1).

Pitt broke the scoreless tie with two runs off Stanton in the fifth inning and chased Tech’s starter with one out. The Panthers added to their lead with a run in the sixth, and struck for two more runs after loading the bases in the eighth.

Joseph Harvey pitched a gem for the Panthers, tossing eight shutout innings with three hits, two walks and three strikeouts. Harvey improved to 2-1 with the victory and Jon Danielczyk closed it out with a scoreless ninth.

Casey Roach had three hits for Pitt, while Manny Pazos drove in two runs.

The Yellow Jackets played error free on defense and recorded three outfield assists in the game. Innis had two – both coming in the sixth inning – and Matt Gonzalez nailed a runner at the plate in the eighth on a laser from left field.

Saturday’s game began at 9:30 a.m. with temperatures in the mid-40s as the game was moved up to avoid impending rain. Tech was shutout for the first time this season.

The series concludes Sunday at 12 p.m. at Charles L. Cost Field.
